5 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Wellness Practitioner
By Hawaiʻi Wellness
Choosing a Practitioner Is Personal
When you’re looking for wellness support—whether you’re seeking massage, acupuncture, therapy, energy work, or any other practice—the choice can feel overwhelming. There are so many modalities, so many practitioners, and it’s not always clear which one is right for you.
The good news: asking the right questions upfront can help you make a choice you’ll feel good about. A quality practitioner will be happy to answer these questions. In fact, they’ll likely welcome the opportunity to explain their approach.
1. What Is Your Training and Background?
Ask about the practitioner’s formal training, certifications, and relevant experience. This looks different depending on the modality—a licensed acupuncturist will have very different credentials than an energy healer or a yoga teacher—but the principle is the same: you want to understand what they’ve studied and how they’ve prepared for their work.
Listen for specific training programs or schools they’ve attended, certifications or licensing (if applicable to their field), years of experience, and ongoing education or professional development.
A practitioner should be able to explain their background clearly and honestly, including any limitations in what they can offer.
2. What Is Your Approach, and How Do You Work?
Different practitioners with the same modality can work in very different ways. One acupuncturist might focus primarily on pain relief; another might take a more holistic, constitutional approach. One massage therapist might do deep tissue work; another might specialize in gentle, energy-based bodywork.
Ask the practitioner to describe how they work—their philosophy, their style, what a typical session looks like. Do they do an intake assessment? Do they involve you in decision-making about treatment? Do they explain what they’re doing and why? Do they create space for you to ask questions?
You’re looking for someone whose approach feels aligned with what you need and how you like to work with practitioners.
3. Do You Accept New Clients, and What Are Your Session Formats?
Some practitioners are fully booked; others actively welcome new clients. Some work only in person; others offer online sessions. Some see clients once and you’re done; others work with clients over a series of sessions for deeper results.
Make sure the practitioner’s availability and format match what you’re looking for. Ask directly: are you currently accepting new clients? Do you offer in-person, online, or both? Do you work with people for single sessions or ongoing treatment?
4. How Do You Communicate, and Are You Easy to Reach?
Good communication makes a huge difference. You want a practitioner who is responsive, who answers your questions, and who is easy to reach if you need to reschedule or follow up.
Notice how quickly they respond to initial inquiries, whether they’re clear about how to contact them, and whether they follow up after sessions to check in on your progress. Your relationship with your practitioner should feel supportive and collaborative.
5. What Are Your Fees?
Be clear about cost before your first session. Ask about the session fee, whether they take insurance or only accept out-of-pocket payment, whether they offer package deals or sliding scale options, and their cancellation policy.
Price varies widely depending on modality, training, location, and experience. Paying more doesn’t always mean better care, but significantly cheaper than the going rate in your area might indicate less training or experience. Find someone whose fees feel fair to you and whose financial policies are clear.
Trust Your Gut
Beyond these five questions, pay attention to how you feel in conversation with the practitioner. Do they listen? Do they make you feel respected? Do you sense that they care about your wellbeing?
The relationship between you and your practitioner matters. Trust and comfort go a long way toward healing. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to keep looking. And if you find someone who feels like the right fit, that relationship can be deeply nourishing.
